Do I Need Insurance to Be a Personal Trainer in the UK?
November 10, 2025
Is It Illegal to Work Without Insurance?
Technically, it’s not illegal to call yourself a personal trainer, even if you don’t hold a Level 3 qualification. However, if you’re working with clients without insurance, you’re putting yourself (and your clients) at risk — legally and financially.
Most gyms and fitness facilities will not employ or hire PTs who aren’t insured. And if you plan to work freelance or online, having the correct insurance is essential.
What Insurance Does a Personal Trainer Need?
As a personal trainer, you should have the following types of insurance:
- Public Liability Insurance
- Covers you if a client is injured or their property is damaged during a session.
- Professional Indemnity Insurance
- Protects you if a client claims your training or advice caused harm or injury.
- Personal Accident Cover (optional)
- Offers protection for you if you’re injured and unable to work.
Some insurers also offer packages tailored to fitness professionals, which may include cover for online sessions and mobile PT work.
You Need a Level 3 Qualification to Get Insured
This is key: To take out valid insurance as a personal trainer, you must hold a recognised Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training.
That’s because insurers require proof that you’re trained and competent to deliver personal training services. Without this qualification, you won’t be eligible for cover, even if you’re passionate and experienced.
If you’re just starting out, you’ll first need to complete:
- A Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing
- Followed by a Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training
You can also fast-track your studies by enrolling in a combined Level 2 & Level 3 PT course — which we offer here at Power Academy UK.
Why This Matters for Your Career
Operating without insurance could lead to:
- Legal claims from injured clients
- Fines or bans from gyms and fitness providers
- Losing credibility or being unable to work professionally
In contrast, being fully qualified and insured builds trust with your clients and opens doors to freelance work, gym employment, and long-term career growth.
